Wire Relay

Overview

The KLZ Wire Relay is a client server system aimed at distributing content among different NewsRoom sites.

A single Wire Relay Server can be used as a distribution centre, or multiple relay servers can be used for servicing specific regions.

Both audio and text may be distributed from a central Newsroom site to other Newsroom sites using the relay.

The two programs which make up the relay are;

Wire Relay Server, and Wire Relay Client

The Wire Relay Server will maintain a list of clients which it will send content to.  When wire items have been received by the wire store on the server s local site the relay server will check its list of clients to see if the relay clients categories of the category of the new wire item.  If there is a match the item will be relayed to the Wire Relay Client.

Once relayed to the client, the items are stored in their respective queues.

Data Flow using Wire Relay

A typical flow of data from one system to another may be as follows:

On the server site, reporters will write their content in newsroom and save their stories in the item store or cast server.  Stories that are to be relayed to other sites will be sent to local wire store as wire items and will be put into a wire queue which is configured for relay.

When the relay server receives a message that there is a new item in the wire store it will check if the item is to be relayed. When the item is to be relayed, the relay server will make a connection to all relay clients which are to receive the item and push the item to the clients. (image above)

The relay clients will send the items received to the local wire store where they can be viewed by newsroom users.  These items can be inserted into casts or item stores as the users wishes.  If items received by the relay client contains audio the client will download audio from the relay server's site and store in a locally configured feed list.
